Truthcatcher was washing the dishes when she heard a gasp behind her. She ignored it, thinking it was nothing important and Atlantis had found some interesting event in the newspaper. But then she heard Wavebreaker call, “Mommy!”
“Yes?” she asked, vaguely uninterested, water trickling down the china.
“I have majik!” Wavebreaker called.
Truthcatcher turned around sharply. “Wave, what did you say?”
“I have majik! Look!” Wavebreaker smiled and whispered something. The dishes washed themselves and stacked themselves neatly on the rack. Atlantis’ armor, which was drying, dried itself and flew near the door. The pots and pans scrubbed themselves clean and stacked themselves neatly in a cabinet. Truthcather stared on, horrified. Atlantis was shocked, holding his newspaper so tightly it started ripping.
"Stop!" Truthcatcher yelled, grabbing Wavebreaker. "Stop it!" Wavebreaker protested, but gave in.
Wavebreaker looked at their mother. "But why, Mommy? I'm helping you!"
Truthcatcher grabbed Wave's shoulders. "Because if you keep doing this you might go crazy. I heard a story of one animus dragon who killed most of his family because he kept on using his powers. I don't want that to happen to you." Truthcatcher released Wave and turned him to face her.
Wave shaking exhaled and looked at his talons. They immediately stopped the pots and pans from doing anything more and collapsed into their mother's arms. "Will that happen to me?" they asked, ready to face the truth.
"No," Truthcatcher said softly. "No, not if you don't use your powers. " Truthcatcher hugged Wave and started rocking him back and forth.
Atlantis walked over and crouched near Wave. "Promise me you'll never use your powers again," Atlantis said. "Promise me that so we won't have to worry about you."
Wavebreaker nodded silently and buried himself in Truthcatcher's chest. Atlantis put his wings around all of them and closed his eyes.
Wavebreaker won't turn into Albatross or Darkstalker, Truthcatcher thought. As long as Atlantis and I live, he will never use his powers ever again.
Part One: The Academy
Chapter One
Truthcather looked up at Wavebreaker. Wave stared ahead, not looking at their mother.
“Wave,” Truthcatcher said. “With grades like these, you’ll never get into Queen Pearl’s Gifted Academy. You need to try harder.”
Wavebreaker looked up, annoyed. Their mother wanted Wave to get into Queen Pearl’s academy. Wave didn’t want to. It was too stressing and they knew, they just knew, that they would hate it there with all the rich dragonets. Wave’s family wasn’t exactly poor. Their father, Atlantis, was a general in the SeaWing army. Their mother, Truthcatcher, was a cook for Queen Pearl. Wave’s family had a steady income, but sometimes they didn't have enough to have a full dinner.
“I’ll try,” Wavebreaker said, for the millionth time. Every time their report card came, Truthcather started a lecture about how Wave should improve their grades and they were sure this time would be no different.
Truthcatcher was stubborn, though, and she did not give up on the conversation. “Wavebreaker,” she said sternly. “You NEED to try harder. If you do not get a grade higher than a 90 in each of your end of school year exams, you will not get into the academy. And if you don’t get into the academy-“
“-I won’t get a stable job at the palace. Yeah, yeah, I know Mother,” Wavebreaker finished for her. “But I don’t even WANT to get into the academy! I don’t want to be surrounded by some spoiled homophobes that will make fun of me because I’m non-binary! I just want to be a regular dragonet!”
Wavebreaker started walking around the room, shouting about all of their problems. "I don't want to go to school! Why do we need algebra and chemistry anyway? Why do we need to learn about the insides of a shark? I don't want to do this! I don't want to be an animus!"
Truthcatcher opened her mouth to say something, but no words came out. She closed her mouth and turned away. Wavebreaker immediately felt bad. They didn't want to blame everything on their mother, but Wave felt that their mother was holding them back from becoming something greater. More powerful.
Wavebreaker whispered, "Sorry," to their mother and turned away. They went to their room and sat on their hammock.
Wave's room was just about the most boring room ever. A hammock hung in the corner, with a desk and a bookshelf. A picture of Atlantis, Wavebreaker, and Truthcatcher was hanging above their desk. Wave looked around their room, bored as heck. They eventually fell asleep, not even noticing it.
Chapter Two
Wave immediately shot up after hearing the sound of talons coming to their room, and grabbed a random book, pretending to be reading. Truthcatcher quietly opened the door, it creaking on its hinges. She walked to Wavebreaker and waited for them to notice her.
"Mom? What do you need?" Wavebreaker asked politely. They would put on a show of being polite to put their mother at ease.
