Prologue[]
As the day was turning to night, an egg cracked. The parents stirred, and then jumped up, nervously looking at their glowing egg. It was not normal for silkwing eggs to glow, but this egg did. The egg was navy blue, with speckles of silver and splotches of gold. The egg radiated light. As the egg cracked, the parents wondered if this was the right choice.
Finally, a very small dragonet crawled out of the eggshell. Her scales were navy blue, with silver and gold undertones. The parents looked angry. The grey one glared at the other one and walked out of the room.
The orange one picked the tiny dragonet up and said to it, “You will not be mine for long.”
Chapter 1[]
The first chapter of my book[]
Timber knew that her parents didn’t love her, even though she was only 1. Not only that, but they despised her. You know how she knew that? Well, let’s consult a regular conversation between Timber and her parents:
Timber: “Hi.”
Fly (Her Mother): “Stop. Your voice makes my ears hurt.”
Copper (Her Father): “Every part of that girl makes me hurt”
So, yes. In her opinion, her parents could go die in a hole. No, wait. Timber would rip their wings to shreds, and then let them die in a hole. (So that they can’t escape.) No, not even that suffices it. Timber would have to rip their wings off, throw them in a hole, and then mock them for a decade or two, while they were starving and suffering.
Anyways, the point is, she hated her parents and they hated her. Timber wasn’t sure why they had her egg in the first place, if they didn’t want her. But that didn’t bother her. Life was always that way. Her parents gave her the smallest room in the house, the least amount of food at mealtime, and just basically mean-ness.
But, everything changed when Weave, Timber’s worst enemy, showed up at their doorstep.
Chapter 2[]
Weave comes and ruins my life[]
Ok, so technically not everything changed. Timber’s parents still hated her, and she was still terrified of her metamorphosis. Wait- pretend you never saw that last part.
TImber sighed. She walked towards the door, and opened it. It was nighttime. Who walks up to the door when dragons are about to go to bed?! She saw a 2 year old dragonet. About… say… double the size of her. Weave was a light yellow color, with undertones of a light turquoise. On his wingbuds, there were little firework patterns in bright cyan.
Timber’s parents absolutely adored Weave. They loved every bit of him. Another reason why Timber hated him. And even worse, Weave had natural charm, so he could get practically anything he wanted, from his parents, and from Timber’s parents.
“Yes?” Timber said flatly. “What do you want?”
Weave smiled, but one of those smiles where it isn’t actually a smile.
“You’re not going to last very long. Your parents are going to get rid of you first chance they get.” He said. Timber frowned.
“Then they would have gotten rid of me long before.” Timber said. True, she did have nightmares where her parents decided, ‘Hey, this dragonet never deserved to live. Let’s toss her off the roof of the hive!’ And Timber also dreamed where she cut off her parents' wings, and then threw them off the roof of the hive. Nevermind that.
Weave said, a little disgruntled, “Well. Anyways. I need to talk to your parents.”
Timber growled and muttered to herself, “It’s always my parents. Why not talk to me sometime? But, if he did try and talk to me, I would bite his face off, and then…” She trailed off as she walked in front of her parents. “Weave wants to see you.” She said. Fly smiled. “Tell him that we’ll be right there!” She said. “Great. Now I’m the messenger.” Timber grumbled. Timber would usually fight with her parents, but she didn’t want to give Weave the satisfaction of more evidence that her parents hated her. She didn’t return to tell Weave, but instead she went upstairs to her room. There was a skylight by her desk. It was a pain when it rained, but when it was a clear sky, Timber liked to look at the stars. It was the only thing that calmed her down enough to sleep. As she started to drift off, she thought of her wings, and what she would do to her parents if she could fly.
Chapter 3[]
I wake up a little wet[]
Timber did not have a good sleep. She kept waking up to hushed whispers of Weave and her parents. Finally, just before dawn, she fell asleep.
She woke up to water on her face. Her bed was rocking. What that normal? Timber was so tired from last night. She opened her eyes, just a crack.
It was blue. Just blue. Timber sat up. Where was she? Timber panicked and looked around. Was it… the ocean? Timber stood up. She was standing on some sort of raft made of treestuff and silk. “Hello?” Timber yelled. She couldn’t even see Pantala. “Anybody?” She yelled louder. What was going on? She looked at the sky. Shy had been asleep for a long time. It was noon, at least. What happened? Timber felt the water. There was a small current pushing her. There was no way a one year old dragonet with no wings could turn around in the current and get to Pantala again. Timber just hoped that this current led to somewhere.
Chapter 4[]
Cherries and ice cream[]
It was getting dark by the time Timber noticed a small bag around her wrist. She slid it off her wrist and opened it. Out tumbled a small pad of blank pieces of parchment and a piece of charcoal.Timber picked up the pad. A note slid out. Timber caught it. It read,
Timber~
Goodbye. We got rid of you.
Obviously.
Timber immediately knew that it was from her parents, even though there was no name. Her parents would SO do this. And Weave… Timber thought that he must have something to do with this too. She was so mad. She tore the notes to pieces, and then threw paper into the water. Once she got back to Pantala, she was going to RIP HER PARENTS TO SHREDS. No. SHE WAS GOING TO RIP WEAVE TO SHREDS IN FRONT OF HER PARENTS, AND THEN RIP HER PARENTS TO SHREDS. Yes. That’s better. Now, all we need is a little cherry to top it off.
Chapter 5[]
Why is it always about Pantala?[]
Timber was decided. As soon as she found a way to get back to Pantala, she. was. going. to. DESTROY. her parents. Yes. Well. Ok...
But... where was Pantala? When Timber woke up, she couldn’t even see Pantala. How did she expect to get back now?
Chapter 6[]
Water sucks[]
It’s been a week since Timber woke up on the raft. In order to stay alive, she caught fish and ate them raw. Timber was sick, and she hasn’t slept. She jumps when the water touches her. She didn’t even notice when there was land in the distance...
Chapter 7[]
Sand, sand, and, you guessed it, sand.[]
When Timber’s raft hit the beach, TImber finally looked up. She saw where she was and jumped off the raft, crawling under a palm tree, not noticing the little hut in the distance.
Meanwhile...
Current was looking out the window when a small dragonet was washed up onto the beach. A silkwing, I think. She hurried around her wooden hut, grabbing a few things and stuffing them in a bag around her neck. Then she ran outside towards the tiny silkwing.
When she got there, Current saw that the silkwing was still breathing. She looked about 1, maybe 2 years old. What is a 1 year old silkwing doing all the way out here? Current thought before picking the dragonet up and bringing it towards the small hut.
Current set the silkwing on the guest bed. She started to make a meal, for when the dragonet woke up.
Chapter 8[]
Soft things are illegal. (Not really)[]
Timber stirred. She felt... something warm. Something... soft? Timber opened her eyes. She was inside somewhere, but not in her house, or on the raft. Timber racked her memory of what had happened when she hit land. Timber had crawled off the raft, too tired to stand. She found some shade and fell asleep… or did she black out? It was too hard to tell. And now… she was here? Where was here, exactly? If she made it back to Pantala… no. It wasn't possible. She must’ve ended up on an island. But it was so big. Could it be? Another continent?
While Timber was wondering all this, Current walked in the room.
When Current was satisfied that the dragonet was going live, she walked out of the room, and grabbed some soup to bring to the silkwing.
Timber looked up. Nobody there. But she felt that she was being watched, just a moment ago…
Current walked in the room, holding the bowl of soup and some bread.
Timber jumped back. “Who are you?” She asked, her voice shaky.
Current smiled. “I’m Current. I found you on the beach, about an hour ago. What about you?”
Timber hesitated for a second, and then said, “I-I am Timber. Where am I?”
Current’s smile dimmed. “Don’t you know? You are in Pyrrhia. Didn’t you- didn’t you travel here?”
Timber looked confused. “No… I don’t know anything about Pyrrhia, nothing at all.”
Current’s eyes widened. “What happened?”
Chapter 9[]
Why do we have to always think?[]
After Timber told Current everything, Current left the room to think. Timber ate her bread and soup. She didn’t want to stay here, and yet she wanted to, too. What if Current abandoned her too?
Current went to her bedroom. She needed to think. Timber was just … sent away? Her parents hated her that much? Well, one thing was decided. Current was going to raise Timber.
Timber thought, What if she doesn’t want me here?
Chapter 10[]
Possibility is a long way away[]
(Note: It has been a week since Timber arrived on the beach.)
Current decided to go to Possibility to get some things for Timber. “Do you wanna come with me?” She asked.
Timber nodded, worried that if she stayed at the house Current would forget about her.
Current smiled and said, “Great. Let me go pack some stuff for the journey, and then we can go.”
Timber shivered. She grabbed her sketchpad, which she took everywhere now.
After Current grabbed everything she needed, she said to Timber, “Are you ready to go?”
“Y-yes.” Timber said. “Where is Possibility?”
“Hmm. You see that desert over there in the distance?”
Timber nodded.
“Well, after you get past that desert, there is a big river. Possibility resides by that river.”
“Oh.” Timber said, nodding her head. “So we are going to walk through the desert?”
Current face-taloned. “Right. You can’t fly yet.” She said. Current thought for a second. She sighed. “I guess we are going to walk through the desert.” Current said.
“Ok.” Timber said, starting to shuffle towards the door.
Chapter 11[]
A really, really, really, long ways away[]
It took 2 days to get to Possibility on foot. When Timber and Current finally got to Possibility, Current started to look for a place to stay at Possibility.
Timber looked around Possibility. It was a busy place- Timber liked it. She absentmindedly followed Current while looking at everything. There was even a map shop.
Current said, “Hey, I think I see a place!” and she flew over the river that was blocking them.
Timber finally looked up at the sound of Current’s voice. She stopped in her tracks. “Water,” Timber whispered, though it was barely audible. “No. Not water.” Timber started to back away, only to run into another dragon. She jumped, running to the first shop she saw. It was the map shop.
“Timber!” Current yelled, running towards the shop. She flew back over the river and to the map shop. There was a sign above the door saying,
Summit’s Maps!
Make a map, Buy a map!
Current burst in the room and found Timber huddled in the corner of the store, the store manager at the front desk looking warily at Timber. She turned to the manager and said, “I am so sorry. I can take care of it.” She gestured to Timber.
Timber looked warily out the window, saw the river, and ducked back down.
“Timber, honey, what’s wrong?” Current asked, concerned.
Timber shook her head and whispered, “The water. It’s mean.”
“Oh. Ok.” Current said, understanding despite the lack of information. “I will look for a place on this side of the river.”
Timber just nodded.
Current sighed and reminded herself what the dragonet went through. She turned to the store manager and asked him, “Could my dragonet please stay here for a bit?” When she saw the dragon’s skeptical look, she added, “I can pay.” The dragon nodded. “Thank you.” Current said, and then put some coins on the table. Then she asked Timber, “I’m going to find somewhere to sleep tonight, ok Timber?”
“Ok. I’m sorry.” Timber said, looking down.
“No, honey, it’s ok. I want you to feel comfortable.” Current insisted. “I’ll be back soon.” Then Current walked out of the store.
Chapter 12[]
Anything is a powerful word[]
After Current left, Timber ducked lower underneath the window. The store manager just ignored her. But when he saw Current coming back to the store, he grabbed a map of Possibility and handed it to Timber. He didn’t say anything.
Current walked into the store. She asked Timber, “Honey, I found a place. You ready to go?”
Timber nodded and stood up. “Thank you.” She said, relieved.
Current smiled at that. “Of course.” Current said. “Anything for you.”
MORE COMING SOON! :D
